Book Review The Rising Wind by Ken Floro III

The Rising Wind Cover final - CopyTitle: The Rising Wind

Have you ever dreamed of being swept into adventure alongside a dashing knight or two? Would you be outraged if you were suddenly thrust into terrifying dangers against your will? What if you found yourself trapped on a cursed island, in the middle of a haunted sea, surrounded by your worst enemies? When a conniving treasure-hunter hijacks the Rising Wind, its passengers will find themselves facing all this and more!

The same trick didn’t work a third time. When Marc stepped into the ring of firelight and shouted a challenge, his adversaries shrank into the shadows across from him – more cautious now than they had been earlier. Their broad limbs and hulking silhouettes prowled the darkness at the edge of the forest, disguising their numbers. Standing exposed, in the open clearing, Marc felt vulnerable, but he knew he couldn’t run. For an anxious moment, he just stood there, uncertain what to do next. The curse of inexperience was lack of foresight, and Marc hadn’t stopped to calculate an alternative in case his original plan failed. Now he had to think on the spot. Unfortunately the present circumstance was no place for contemplation. So, in that dangerous moment, he acted on instinct.

This review will be short, because well, I have trouble reviewing books I really enjoyed. The Rising Wind is one of my favorite books I’ve read all year. I loved the dynamics between Marc and Monty, the unruly and boyish duo functioning as main characters in this enjoyable read. Marc and Monty are both Knights and aristrocrats, so like all young men of their age, they kind of act like they’re better than anyone else. It may seem annoying, but it’s actually rather hilarious, and makes for quite a few eye-rolling scenes. When the ship they boarded, The Rising Wind, strands on an enchanted island filled with monsters and other nightmarish creatures, Marc and Monty’s heroism is soon put to the test.

This is the kind of book that would get me into reading. It reminded me of Feist’s “The Magician”, of the Dragonriders of Pern, of everything that’s great in epic fantasy.

The character development is immense. No character comes out the same at the end of the ride. I was amazed by the amount of thought and detail put into this book. Truly, an amazing read.

Book Excerpt from The Scent of Roses

I’m happy to host a snippet today from western historical romance “The Scent of Roses”. This book sounds like an awesome read. Enjoy the snippet!

Book Excerpt

Her eyes resembled liquid emeralds, Whip thought, peering through the tiny peephole from the hidden passageway. Fine cheekbones, a firm chin, and a mouth he found disturbingly inviting. He couldn’t be sure of the color of her hair due to her bonnet. She’d skinned the hair back from her face so tightly, it had to hurt. He didn’t know her name, but he recognized her scent. Roses and talcum.

Damn. It infuriated him to have to hide out in his own house, especially in a musty, cobwebbed rathole of a passageway. He ached with the need to get at the woman on the other side of the wall. She knew how and why his partner died last night, may even have pulled the trigger. She’d had Josiah’s blood on her, after all; had gotten it on Whip.

His mind filled with the memory of how small and fragile she’d felt in his arms, how oddly right, almost familiar, holding her had felt. He couldn’t account for the notion, and disliked it intensely, but could not banish it.

What had those innocent-seeming, shockingly green eyes seen last night? What had those tiny hands done? The rider he’d seen galloping from the house may have been the actual shooter, but the woman had taken some part in the killing. Why else would she have been hiding on the porch?

If he could just get her alone a few minutes. That’s all he’d need. He shifted, seeking a more comfortable position, and thick dust wafted around him. He twitched his nose to ward off a sneeze, then pinched his nostrils shut until the urge went away.

In the sitting room, Lucinda’s brother watched the Delaney woman as if he wanted to pour warm sorghum all over her and lick it off. Whip itched to strangle him.

Author Bio

I love to write. I love to put characters in situations that seems impossible to get out of. Almost. Then, out of the blue, along comes that sexy, breathtakingly, handsome hero who can and will save the day. Sometimes, (I like this part), it’s the heroine who steps up and saves the day. I love to write. Did I mention that? Anyway, I love mystery, suspense and the forever kind of love. When someone asks me, “what do you write?” I can’t say romance. It’s not that simple. I want action, adventure, suspense with caring, loving, sexy, characters that seem to find trouble wherever they go.
I am married to my real life sexy hero who finds my imagination intriguing, but refuses to read my books. Thank God. Our, live-at-home children greet us at the door with tongues hanging and tails wagging. They travel with us when we vacation and get depressed when we have to leave them. We have four grown children who live close enough for us to see often.

Author Interview with Grant Reed

I’m hosting an interview today with Grant Reed, the author of mystery/humor book “Garrett’s Mulligan”.

1) What is the hardest part about being an author?

For me, there are a few things I find difficult about being a writer. If I had to choose one, I would say it is extremely difficult for me to try and find the time to write on a regular schedule when I also have to work full time. In the past I have done the majority of my writing when I have been laid off or between contracts, but I have been known to write 7 days a week while working a full time job as well. I guess the dream is to write full time, and pay my bills with my writing. I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed though, as the bills keep on coming!!

2) Can you give us the synopsis of your book? and 3) Is this part of a series or a stand alone?

I’ll answer questions 2 and 3 together, so you can see where Garrett’s Mulligan fits in with the overall flow of the rest of the series. There is a jump in time from when the first books take place!

 Grant’s Vellian Novels:

Vellian Heroes Book 1 (written with Gary Reed)

Funny Fruit

This is the first book in the Vellian Novels and is the story of the two old Masters Fonn and Yarl. In their 90’s, the brothers set out to train new apprentices as future Protectors of the Realm. Young Garrett and Azilda are selected, and adventures unfold as the characters embark upon a journey to stop the King’s First General from usurping the crown.

Vellian Heroes Book 2

The Cassadian Chalice (written with Gary Reed)

This is the second book in the Vellian Novels and continues the story of the children Garrett and Azilda as they train under their respective Masters. General Ascentyai Asimo and his son Vanrai may be in prison for their crimes against the Crown, but their indomitable drive will see them put the realm in its greatest danger yet.

Vellian Mysteries Book 1

Garrett’s Mulligan

Twenty years after the adventures in the Cassadian Chalice, Garrett’s Mulligan follows Garrett and his miniature dragon partner Merle as they attempt to make it in the real world. Garrett has finally received his P.I. papers and he and Merle must undertake a case for a notorious gangster in order to pay their bills.

Vellian Mysteries Book 2

The Deepbrook Devil

The latest Vellian Mystery has Garrett and his old friend Willie Taylor searching for the legendary creature of the Lonely Wood. The Deepbrook Devil is a century old legend that appears to have some truth to the myth. While Garrett and Willie hunt the beast, Merle finds himself in hot water back home, when his and Garrett’s automaton helper is signaled out by a dozen witnesses, as the abomination that murdered a businessman in his new factory.

4) How many hours do you write per day?

The amount of hours I write per day changes. I don’t have a set amount of hours, but I have a set amount of pages I like to complete. Some days the writing flows well and I finish my quota in two hours. Some days it takes six hours. The average time I write is probably around three hours a day.

5) What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is probably “Knights of Dark Renown” by David Gemmell. I discovered this book by Mr. Gemmell when I was 14 and I was mesmerized by the characters. How could good guys be so morally divided? Not all the heroes were knights in shining white, unblemished armor, and not all the bad guys were black hearted devils, they were all human. I was hooked.

6) What are you working on now?

I am currently working on my sixth novel, the next Vellian Mystery with Garrett and Merle. It’s 90% plotted out, and I am writing some preliminary outlines now.

Garrett’s Mulligan

garrettsmulliganfrontTitle: Garrett’s Mulligan

Author: Grant Reed

Genre: Humor / Fantasy / Mystery

At thirty-one Garrett Willigins has finally earned his private investigator’s badge. Unfortunately, the bills haven’t stopped coming and building a solid reputation won’t happen overnight. Forced to take employment wherever they can, Garrett and his miniature dragon partner Merle, must dirty their hands any way possible to make a buck. Shoveling manure, chasing cats, and dock duty seem to be the order of the day.
Working off back rent for a notorious gangster isn’t the safest of jobs on a good day, but when the other workers start turning up dead, Garrett finds himself elbow deep in a mystery that could spell a quick end to his short P.I. career.

Author Bio

SONY DSCGrant Reed has a background in business management, computer programming, and computer networking.  He would much rather be out fishing though, so he spends his time writing and working contract jobs. He lives in Lively Ontario, Canada with his wife Robin, and their two children Aidan and Megan

Author Interview with Duncan M. Hamilton

I’m hosting an interview today with author Duncan M. Hamilton, the writer of “The Tattered Banner”, a fantasy novel. Thanks for the interview, Mr. Hamilton!

The Interview

1) What is the hardest part about being an author?

Knowing when to quit for the day. I often find myself writing way into the night. (I’m writing the answer to this at 1am!)

2) Can you give us the synopsis of your book?

The Tattered Banner is set in a Renaissance style fantasy world, where magic is outlawed and skill with a sword is revered.

It is the story of a young man with unique talent who is presented with what are ostensibly great opportunities, but are really tools to allow him be used as a pawn in plots and events beyond his knowledge or comprehension.

Any more than that will just give it away!

3) Is this part of a series or a stand alone?

The Tattered Banner is the first part of the Society of the Sword trilogy. The second part should be out in late autumn.

4) How many hours do you write per day?

It varies a huge amount. At least three or four though.

5) What is your favorite book?

You could get a different answer from me on this every day. The Three Musketeers is today’s. Captain Blood, Scaramouche and The Count of Montecristo are the other most likely answers.

6) What are you working on now?

My workflow involves two projects on the go at any time, a first draft and a project at the editing stage. Right now I’m doing the final edits on the second part of the Society of the Sword trilogy and I’m also working on the first draft of a new trilogy that I hope to release toward the end of next year.

In a world where magic is outlawed, ability with a sword is prized above all else. For Soren this means the chance to live out his dreams.

Plucked from a life of privation, he is given a coveted place at Ostenheim’s Academy of Swordsmanship, an opportunity beyond belief.

Opportunity is not always what it seems however, and gifts rarely come without conditions. Soren becomes an unwitting pawn in a game of intrigue and treachery that could cost him not just his dreams, but also his life.

Author Interview with Greg Sandora

I’m hosting an interview today with Greg Sandora, author of political thriller “Jack Canon’s American Destiny”.

1) What is the hardest part about being an author?

Finding time to do chores and things that take me away from writing. I love to write, and my stories absorb a lot of my thinking. Writing takes me away and gives me a break from the hustle and frantic pace of the world around me.  When I had my business, we used to gamble or take day trips to get away. Now I have my writing, and I try to savor it and take my time. Balancing priorities and keeping the emphasis on the fun would be the hardest part of being an author.

 2) Can you give us the synopsis of your book?

Jack Canon is going to be President of the United States–no matter what!
It all starts when Jack is ten years old, on a missionary trip to Africa.  He is forever marked by the inhumanity he sees there. As he comes of age he realizes politics is the only way to make meaningful change happen and help those less fortunate. We meet Jack again during the campaign of 2016 in Washington, D.C. and follow him and his loyal friends through to the Democratic National Convention and beyond.  We find a long and painful recession has left ordinary Americans suffering, spawning the hottest Presidential Contest in history.
Desperate and corrupt, the leader of the free world orders a hit to slow him down. The plan backfires–the wrong people are dead–a manhunt points to the unthinkable–
Rewind one year, Jack’s focus on redistribution of wealth and energy has made him powerful enemies. Once his friends, Rogue Billionaires, Oil Sheiks, the Mob, all want him gone. A Universal Raw Nerve of wealth vs. poverty is exposed becoming a thrill ride as deep machinations of espionage, geo-politics and deception, even murder play out. Jack is kind and charismatic, and just naughty enough to have you falling for him like one of his loving circle of loyal friends.
Of course he’s flawed, a dedicated family man, faithful to one woman, but in love with two. Is it his fault his best friend, Sandy, is impossibly jaw dropping beautiful? We see Jack through his friends and the lengths he will go to help someone in need. Thinks crime and passion meets tender romance and innocence. All leading to a heart thumping climax so shocking you’ll pull the covers and draw the shades!

3) Is this part of a series or a stand alone?

Jack Canon’s American Destiny is the first book in a series. The sequel titled Jack Canon’s Women of the House is at the publisher now being edited for a November 2013 release. There’s plenty of action and suspense, tenderness and romance to carry forward the saga. The girls are hot and Jack must deal with some of the most dangerous criminals on the planet.

4) How many hours do you write per day?

I write about an hour and a half each weekday. I like to write before the sun comes up, usually between 5:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. More on the weekends.

5) What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is the Course in Miracles.

6) What are you working on now?

I am writing a book about an angel. A widower, Bo, with two small children meets, Gabby, in Bar Harbor, Maine. Quite by accident, she wasn’t supposed to reveal herself, but in his relaxed semi-slumber state, he catches a brief glimpse. She is not the most powerful of angels, reserved for guarding the outer edges of the earth, but as guardian and messenger, she is sent to do errands for God. After saving someone from a brutal attack – Bo and Gabby embark on a two week motorcycle adventure across America – saving innocents and coming to the aid of those less fortunate people Gabby is instructed to assist. As the two spend time together, Bo not only falls hopelessly in love, but begins to change. He succumbs to temptation just as Gabby must leave the earth. She can no longer protect him. Will his life ever be the same? Anymore and I would spoil the twist.

About Jack Canon’s American Destiny

6065346[1]Title: Jack Canon’s American Destiny

Genre: Political Thriller

It’s the steamy summer of 2016 in Washington, D.C. just days before the Democratic National Convention. A long and painful recession has left ordinary Americans suffering, spawning the hottest Presidential Contest in history. Jack Canon, a man born into privilege, a witness to great social injustice is going to be President of the United States–no matter what! Desperate and corrupt, the leader of the free world orders a hit to slow him down. The plan backfires–the wrong people are dead–a manhunt points to the unthinkable–The President of the United States.
Rewind one year, Jack’s focus on redistribution of wealth and energy has made him powerful enemies. Once his friends, Rogue Billionaires, Oil Sheiks, the Mob, all want him gone. The current President wants him alive–thinking he can win against an unabridged liberal. A Universal Raw Nerve of wealth vs. poverty is exposed becoming a thrill ride as deep machinations of espionage, geo-politics and deception, even murder play out. Kind and charismatic, Jack’s just naughty enough to have you falling for him like one of his loving circle of loyal friends. Of course he’s flawed, a dedicated family man, faithful to one woman, but in love with two. Is it his fault his best friend is impossibly jaw dropping beautiful? Think the crime and passion of the Godfather meets the romance and innocence of Camelot. A story that could spark a movement, a book that can seed a revolution. A heart thumping climax so shocking you’ll pull the covers and draw the shades! One things for sure, through all the drama and suspense, you’ll be pulling for Jack!

Author Bio

3929240[1]_optI’m originally from the Portland, Maine area and lived and worked there for years before moving to Southwest Florida. I am currently working on the sequel to Jack Canon’s American Destiny – which will be titled Jack Canon Clean Sweep. The sequel will be available in about three months.
My Dad and Mom were artists, my father painted and my mother wrote poetry and loved to garden. Most Saturdays we loaded up the 1970 Chevy Impala to trek to a one man show somewhere or other. I took a different track graduating with a business degree; owning and operating an Award Winning Franchise Fitness Center. Currently a professional manager I am living in Florida with my beautiful wife and children, and following my passion.
Some of my other projects include a children’s book called Sammy the Sea Turtle – about an infant sea turtle taken from his nest the night he was to find his way to the sea. Sammy lives with the family until their son – the boy who took him, graduates from high school. On that day Sammy, backpack in tow – begins the long journey home.
My second project in the works involves angels – a man during a visit to Bar Harbor Maine encounters an angel; quite accidentally, he is told – she was not supposed to make him aware of her existence. Only three others have ever seen the real thing. Naturally he falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful creature.

Author Interview with Kat Mellon

I’m hosting an interview with Kat Mellon, the author of literary fiction novella “Creation”. Thank you for answering my questions, Kat!

Author Interview

1) What is the hardest part about being an author?

Having the discipline to write (and on a consistent schedule, no less)! Novels don’t always write themselves, particularly when inspiration is lacking. See #4 for my binge-writing tendencies…

2) Can you give us the synopsis of your book?

Here’s the short version: Creation explores the consequences of a society in which creative individuals are forced to create strictly for the benefit of others.

3) Is this part of a series or a stand alone?

To many a reader’s dismay, Creation is a standalone work of fiction. I have no plans to write a sequel at this time.

4) How many hours do you write per month?

Not enough! There are months where I hammer out 100K words (roughly 400 “book” pages!) of material and months where I write nothing at all.

5) What is your favorite book?

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. This novel is so much more than a novel. In fact, it’s unearthly brilliance that was somehow captured, trapped, and bound together for the human race to delight over. 😉

6) What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a literary fiction novel titled Flowers When You’re Dead. It involves a socially isolated nineteen-year-old guy, art therapy, and a vintage shop. You can learn more about it at

CREATIONTitle: Creation

Author: Kat Mellon

Genre: Literary Fiction

Who owns what you create?

Creation is a provocative exploration of what it means to be free. Set in a dystopian future where creativity is exclusively harnessed for the greater good, two artistically talented individuals remind us all never to take for granted the product of our own work and imagination.

Creation is inspired by Ayn Rand’s Anthem and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go.
