Author Interview with A Life Less Ordinary

I’m interviewing Victoria Bernadine, author of chicklit novel “A Life Less Ordinary”. Bolded are my questions, responses are in regular font.

1) What’s the hardest part of being an author?

Staying motivated enough through Editing Hell in order to truly finish the story.  The initial writing is great!  Editing has it’s own pleasures (yes, I’m sick) but it can be tedious.  And neverending.  I have to play hooky by writing other stories in order to keep motivated – LOL.

2) Can you give us a short synopsis of A Life Less Ordinary?

It’s about a forty-five year old woman who gets fed up with her life.  She quits her job, sells her house and runs away on a six month road trip intent on rediscovering herself and accompanied by a handsome younger man.

3) Is this part of a series, or stand-alone?

This began as a stand-alone, but I do have a sequel started…much to my chagrin – LOL.

4) How many hours per day do you spend writing?

It varies, depending on what’s going on in my life.  It’s more important to me to write every day, even if it’s only for fifteen minutes.  On average, though, I spend at least 1-2 hours per day.  I know, I know – I need to spend more time (although in my defense, this is the average amount of time – LOL).

5) What is your favorite book in the same genre as yours?

Hmmm.  That’s tough, because it changes.  I really enjoy Meg Cabot’s Heather Wells books (Size 12 is Not Fat; Size 14 is Not Fat Either; Big Boned; Size 12 and Ready to Rock; The Bride Wore Size 12 – although I haven’t read the last two yet).  Actually, now that I think about it, I’m not sure if they’re really considered to be the same genre as mine…but close enough, I think!  😀

6) What are you working on now?

I’m working on a romantic comedy called Along Came Jones.  It’s about a man whose long-term girlfriend breaks up with him, and a woman who’s a recluse.  I’m working towards a May release date for it.  🙂

About the Book

Updated cover patricia feb 28 13Title: A Life Less Ordinary

Author: Victoria Bernadine

Genre: Chicklit, Contemporary Fiction

For the last fifteen years, Rose “Manny” Mankowski has been a very good girl. She turned her back on her youthful fancies and focused on her career. But now, at the age of 45, she’s questioning her choices and feeling more and more disconnected from her own life. When she’s passed over for promotion and her much younger new boss implies Manny’s life will never change, something snaps. In the blink of an eye, she’s quit her job, sold her house and cashed in her pension, and she’s leaving town on a six month road trip.

After placing a personal ad for a travelling companion, she’s joined in her mid-life crisis by Zeke Powell, the cynical, satirical, most-read – and most controversial – blogger for the e-magazine, What Women Want. Zeke’s true goal is to expose Manny’s journey as a pitiful and desperate attempt to reclaim her lost youth – and increase his readership at the same time. Leaving it all behind for six months is just an added bonus.

Now, armed with a bagful of destinations, a fistful of maps, and an out-spoken imaginary friend named Harvey, Manny’s on a quest to rediscover herself – and taking Zeke along for the ride.

Victoria Bernadine (a pseudonym) is, as the saying goes, a “woman of a certain age”. After twenty-something years of writer’s block, she began writing again in 2008.

Victoria enjoys reading all genres and particularly loves writing romantic comedy and post-apocalyptic science fiction. What those two have in common is anybody’s guess.

She lives in Edmonton with her two cats (The Grunt and The Runt). A Life Less Ordinary is the first novel she felt was good enough to be released into the wild.

Lunch with Briggs is like sitting at the king’s table in a medieval fantasy novel: everybody hates you because the king likes you, and they all secretly plot the best way to bring about your painful demise. In the IBI lunchroom, this comes in the form of not-so-subtle whispering and intermittent glances from the various office cliques. They all have their own tables: Homicide in the far right corner, Cyber Security near the salad bar, Special Forces next to the finger food serving line. When we first sit down with our trays—me, Briggs, and Weiss—the entire room falls into a startled hush. Briggs sits alone (with Weiss). Always.

Change is anathema to the IBI.

Before I can even bite into my sub, I spot Jin mouthing words to me from his place at the end of the Cyber Sec table. On his first try, the message reads something like: Wart our yodeling? Realizing his exaggerated enunciation, complete with wide O’s and sluggish tongue movements, makes him look the part of a character in a slow-mo gag video, he tries again, lips moving at a normal pace this time around: What are you doing?

I smile and take a large bite out of my lunch. Jin pouts and stuffs an entire handful of fries into his mouth. He’s well aware I’ll tell him all my dirty secrets later today, but the man is a gossip lover at heart, and it physically hurts him to be left out of the loop for even half a second. Unfortunately for Jin, this is neither the place nor the time to tell him I’m about to do something illegal.

Release Day Party Who Killed ‘Tom Jones’?

We’re celebrating the release today for “Who Killed ‘Tom Jones’?” by author Gale Martin.

Book Excerpt

A resonant male voice—Stan McCann’s, she presumed—began belting out “Delilah,” one of Tom Jones’ biggest hits, and the crowd cheered him and the fact that the show had finally taken off.

I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window,” McCann sang as he proceeded down the stage-right steps and strutted through the aisle, approaching Ellie’s row. All decked out in a black bolero jacket with a sequined lapel, starched white shirt, and satin cummerbund, he could have doubled for a bullfighter on a dude ranch. He looked yummy. Good enough to nibble on.

“Stan? Oh, Stan?” Dorothy Hamill called in a high-pitched squeal. Dorothy hurled her panties towards him, and they sailed past Ellie’s face, landing in the middle of the aisle at his feet. “For you, honey,” she cried.

Between stanzas, McCann retrieved the panties, rewarding Dorothy with the attention she craved. Then he mopped his brow with them, causing a fresh round of squeals. Like a toreador, he bowed theatrically to the smitten panty-chucker. “Thank you, darlin’,” he purred, in a rich lilt that sounded like he’d been weaned in Wales instead of the U.S.A. Then he aped sniffing her panties. “We’ve met before, haven’t we?”

Dorothy screamed louder than the lovesick teenagers at the first (and last) Hanson concert Ellie had attended in junior high school. If Dorothy howled in her ear like that again, Ellie might have to stomp on her brown suede boots.

She groaned out loud at Dorothy’s antics, which caught McCann’s attention. He met her gaze, then cut his eyes to Dorothy’s face, giving her outfit a onceover. “Sisters?” he asked.

As if! Ellie thought.

Embarrassed, Ellie shook her head no, but Dorothy cried out, “Yes, yes!

That one would say anything McCann wanted to hear.

As McCann strutted down the aisle toward stage left, Dorothy turned on Ellie. “Why didn’t you tell him we were sisters?”

“Why do you think?”

Dorothy pouted. “But he was looking for sisters.”

I’ll bet he was. Ellie thought. Or at least the persona he’d adopted was. But it was best not to scold Dorothy. If she wanted to behave like a fawning groupie, that was on her. But Ellie didn’t want to be sucked into that scene. It was common knowledge that in his prime, Tom Jones slept with 250 groupies a year. If one of his impersonators behaved like that as well, she wanted nothing to do with him. Nor did the situation require launching into an explanation of why Ellie was in the audience to begin with. Certainly not for a one night stand with a Tom Jones impersonator, no matter how good he was.

No, Ellie clung to a thread of hope that she might find (dare she even think it?) her soul mate here, not someone pawing at her between the sheets for a quickie with the very next quickie waiting in the wings.

As it turned out, a barrage of panties and one or two bras chased McCann all the way to a set of wooden steps flanking the stage. The stairs hadn’t been painted yet. In fact, the entire stage unit must have gone up hastily, from the slapdash look of it.

McCann picked up one of the brassieres and swung it over his head as if preparing to lasso some lucky Double-D cup in the crowd.

“Oh, oh, oh,” Dorothy cried, as if pained again.

This was some serious fan crush, bordering on groupie pathology. Ellie was equally as enthusiastic a Tom Jones fan but prided herself on showing more restraint.

McCann swayed back and forth in front of the stair unit, in three-quarter time. Though his head and broad shoulders dipped right and left, his crisp white shirt barely moved. Extra starch, she supposed.

My, my, my, Delilah,” he sang, his unrequited love for the two-timing Delilah infusing every grand gesture. As Ellie let the familiar refrain in a pitch-perfect imitation wash over her, she recalled a particular video of Tom Jones himself singing this song on some British version of “American Bandstand,” while hundreds of young people struggled to fast dance to a waltz-time ballad. Tom Jones warbled like a champ, but the crowd’s attempts at dancing put her in mind of gooney birds doing the time step.

McCann had cultivated the singer’s signature mannerisms—punching the air rhythmically, sliding from one note to the next in a dramatic portamento—and every bit of the swagger.

“He’s a great impersonator,” Ellie said.

“Tribute artist,” Dorothy scolded. “These days, they like to be called tribute artists.”

Ellie nodded sheepishly. Between the chorus and the next verse, McCann started up the stairs to the stage. As he ascended the third step, it was as if the show switched to slow motion. McCann lifted his left leg, poised to land on the next stair. Ellie watched in horror as it crashed through the plywood plank, tearing McCann’s perfectly creased pants and reducing his left leg to an unsightly stump, at least from the audience’s perspective.

Festival-goers gasped. McCann stopped singing and clutched first at his thigh and then at his groin, unable to extract himself from the jagged plank.

“Help,” the baritone trilled in an agonizing register that rang out almost an octave higher. “Somebody . . . help!”

The piped-in accompaniment stuttered to silence.

Who Killed ‘Tom Jones’?

who killed tom jones cover finalIn Gale Martin’s newest novel, Ellie Overton is a 28-year-old rest home receptionist with a pussycat nose who also happens to be gaga for the pop singer Tom Jones. Regrettably single, she is desperate to have a red-hot love relationship, like those she’s read about in romance novels. Following an astrological hunch, she attends a Tom Jones Festival and meets an available, young impersonator with more looks and personality than talent. Though he’s knocked out of the contest, he’s still in the running to become Ellie’s blue-eyed soul mate—until he’s accused of killing off the competition. It’s not unusual that the handsome police detective working the case is spending more time pursuing Ellie than collaring suspects. So, she enlists some wily and witty rest home residents to help find the real murderer. Will Ellie crack the case? Must she forfeit her best chance for lasting love to solve the crime?

Book Excerpt Jack Canon’s Women of the House

Tip stood at the edge of the couch looking down at me. Sandy’s bare legs as the backdrop, “Jack, Winston is in the outer office. He told me he’s been waiting for more than a half-hour.”
“Does he look pissed?”
“Very. But then again when does
n’t he? I’ve never seen him smile. Have you?”
“Tell Daphne we’ll be just a few more minutes.”
“There’s one other thing before we get to him.”
Tip looked concerned for the third time today.
“What is it?”
“First let me preface, it’s not as bad as it sounds, but it’s the second time it’s happened – so I thought you should know.”
“Tip, the suspense, just tell us.”
“It’s Martha, Jack…” My heart sank, “She snuck into the lobby and pretended to be on tour with the folks. I let it go the first time – figured it was a harmless prank – kid’s stuff, but…”
I cut him off, “How did she get past your guys?”
“Disguised in an oversized t-shirt, hair up in one of your baseball caps, wearing dark lensed sunglasses. I think they’re Kathy’s.”
I sat straight up, brushed my pants to straighten them, and tucked in my shirt. He didn’t notice – his eyes planted on the most pleasant sight in the room and stayed there. Sandy was the object of his desire – she was in rare form, and of all days, on this one—she may have peaked. Tip could keep at least half his brain tuned in to a conversation while the other indulged in his infatuation. ‘Dual Core, he always joked about his talent…’
“Do you think she was trying to sneak out?”
“I don’t know, maybe seeing how far she could get. Anyway, one of her agents intercepted her. I guess Martha doesn’t realize we have her on continuous watch. And, after the first time we added one of our people to the tour.”
“I’ll bet she was startled getting caught?”
“Not really. She was indignant – threw off the baseball cap and glasses and ran upstairs. The agent just followed her per protocol.”
Sandy interjected, “She’s a teenager, probably wants to see if she could get out sometime to be with her friends.”
“Well there’s no need for you to worry, Jack, we’ve had her double teamed since day one, – she’d have to evade ten of our best to get to the street.”
“Even so, Tip, she shouldn’t be making your life difficult. Bring me some of the letters.”
“Are you sure, Jack?”
“Martha may as well know right now what we’re up against.”
“I have them on my tablet.” Tip tapped the face of the screen a few times then passed it to me.
“May I read it?” Sandy asked, intercepting the device.
After reading only a few sentences, she dropped the screen into her lap. “Oh my God,” She shuttered shaking her head, raising her shoulders, “Whoever wrote this isn’t human. You can’t show her, she’ll have nightmares for the rest of her life.”
Tip filled in the blanks, “It’s been traced to a White Supremacist group in Northern Montana. They hate Jack for his stand on equality for women and minorities.”
Sandy’s eyes got teary, “Are you going after these men?” She pressed at the screen to get rid of the horror but couldn’t make the thing to turn off. The words just stayed put—handing it back to Tip like it was a hot potato, “Take this awful thing.” Sandy started crying, “The world has some evil people…”
I pulled her close to me, hugging snug to comfort her, “Don’t worry, Tip has a man on the inside, – he’s infiltrated the group. We’re working on it.”
Tip attempted a rare moment of tenderness, bending down looking directly into Sandy’s eyes, “These guys are already dead, – they, just don’t know it yet.”
“Do you need a tissue?” I asked, “To wipe your eyes?”
“No—I’ll be okay. It just makes me scared reading things like this.” I spoke softly into her hair, “No ones ever going to bother you, we have teams protecting you.”
We heard a knock on the door. Daphne stepped into the office. I caught a glimpse of her raised eyebrows – she was rolling her eyes into the back of her head. In her way, expressing displeasure…

Book Excerpt from The Continuing Journeys of a Different Necromancer

I’m going to share an excerpt with you from fantasy novel “The Continuing Journeys of a Different Necromancer”. I hope you enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

A dozen tiny hands grabbed her by the hair and jerked her off the seat and across the giving sand. He dove for her feet, but only his fingertips touched her. Scrambling to his feet he chased her into the dark, but his name, coming to him in screams, faded quickly into the distance. He fell to all fours crying out her name in breathless sobs.

 * * * *

The sun shone bright in the clear, blue, noonday sky. The surf broke on the yellow-brown sand of the beach. He felt as if he had just awakened from a long, deep sleep. Only a dream, only a dream.’He sat up and wrapped his knees to his chest with his arms.

A low moan came from behind him and made him turn.

There, held with arms outstretched by tiny, grey-skinned hands against the rocks of the cliffside, was Christina. Jagged metal fishing barbs protruded from every inch of her naked body, with strings dangling from them. A small pudgy grey-skinned thing sat on her head holding two strings attached to barbs pulling her eyelids open so he could see the pain-filled pleading.

Another little pudgy creature’s head emerged from the rocks beside her, and giggled a high-pitched laugh that reminded him of an insane child. With one of its small hands, it grabbed a string and pulled down.

His Chris opened her mouth to scream, but another of the hands formed into a fist and punched it down her throat. Tears rolled down her cheeks and sobs racked her body.

He tried to run to her, but couldn’t move. Looking down, he saw the same hands latched onto his clothes, he felt them stretching his mouth and pulling his hair. With that same insane giggling, they pulled him back and out over the water. Further and further out, until the land became a haze on the edge of his vision. Shadows swam below him, just under the surface, waiting for the hands to drop him into their deep terrifying home. One of them looked around to put its white-eyed face in his. With its razor sharp teeth, it bit savagely into his nose. He screamed and they let him fall. For an impossibly long time the water grew closer. He screamed more as the shadows below gathered for his plunge into what he somehow knew to be an icy death.

Character Interview and Giveaway The Emperor’s New Clothes

I’m hosting a character interview and giveaway today for “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Enjoy!

1) Hey there! Nice to meet you. Can you introduce yourself?

I’m Susskin Leeo, a hover-cab driver on Baldessh. On a world where everyone’s family, someone has to keep secrets safe. Who’s going where, who’s doing what. Or whom. Some worlds have priests, and confessionals. Baldessh has its hover-cab drivers.

2) How did you get involved in this story?

So our new Kovan Overlords have declared a curfew, nobody’s out partying. Slow, slow night. It’s way past midnight, and I’m just parked a block away from what used to be the hottest club in the city, before the invasion…this guy, nobleman, probably an outworlder, just drops into the car.
Wants to steal a ship from the Kovans.
Now I have a cousin that can get you damn near everything, legal or tax-free, but even she can’t arrange a spaceship, bless-her-implants.
Well this guy pulls it off–if by “steal a spaceship” you mean “steal our entire space fleet, the Royal Menagerie, the Baldasshi Parliament, and our Princess.”

3) What’s your life’s motto?

It used to be “You only live once…twice, at most…so avoid paying as much tax as possible”. But after having Royce Ree in my car–the “steal the whole damn planet” guy–it’s become “What would Royce Ree do?”

4) If you could be anywhere but here, where would you go?

Plostroon V. Royce told me it’s got the best salt-water taffy this side of the ‘verse.

5) What’s your favorite food?

A #4 at Geddys’s cantina, at the spaceport loading-docks. Best damn laxative you’re *ever* going to get without going to the medicos. People get in my cab, start complaining about complicated everything is, and I always tell ’em: The key to having a clean life is to have a clean bowel.
