LEARNING TO SWIM coverTitle: Learning to Swim

Author: Annie Cosby

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

When Cora’s mother whisks the family away for the summer, Cora must decide between forging her future in the glimmering world of second homes where her parents belong, or getting lost in the bewitching world of the locals and the mystery surrounding a lonely old woman who claims to be a selkie creature—and who probably needs Cora more than anyone else.

Through the fantastical tales and anguished stories of the batty Mrs. O’Leary, as well as the company of a particularly gorgeous local boy called Ronan, Cora finds an escape from the reality of planning her life after high school. But will it come at the cost of alienating Cora’s mother, who struggles with her own tragic memories?

As the summer wanes, it becomes apparent that Ronan just may hold the answer to Mrs. O’Leary’s tragic past—and Cora’s future.

Author Interview with Alex Laybourne

diariesdamnedbanner

I’m interviewing Alex Laybourne, author of zombie horror “Diaries of the Damned”. Welcome to my blog, Alex, and thanks for answering my questions.

Author Interview

1) What’s the hardest part of being an author?

For me, the hardest part about being an author is simply finding the time to sit down and write. I work a full time job which takes about 50-60 hours out of my week, not including the commute. I travel quite frequently for it also, which means 18 hour days. I have four young children, and also like to spend some time with my wife. Being a writer takes sacrifice, it means you stay in when others go out, you don’t sleep enough and are often a slave to the muse. When she wakes and tells you to write, there is very little you can do to convince her otherwise. We do it gladly, because we know what it takes, we understand that being a writer is a commitment, it is something serious and we all strive to achieve the success we seek. Explaining this to people who do not write, and not having them look at you as if you had a screw loose is something else entirely.

2) Can you give us a short synopsis of Diaries of the Damned?

The Diaries of the Damned is a horror novel that takes place before during and after the zombie outbreak. Told from varying viewpoints, each story adds a little piece to the puzzle, until the group of survivors telling their tales get not only answers to the questions they had, but the truth to the points everybody was afraid to ask. Where did the virus come from, and why.

3) Is this part of a series, or stand-alone?

The story was originally part of a chapter series. I wrote and released one a week. However once it was finished I decided to re-publish it as a single novel. Each character viewpoint is three chapters long, and tells a complete tale, so the book can be read in multiple sittings. Each character has their own complete story line to follow, with one central story running through the books as a single read.

4) How many hours per day do you spend writing?

I spent as many hours as I can writing. It would depend who you ask. My wife would say too many, I would say not enough. In all honest, I get up at 4.20 every morning and write before the kids wake up – which with my kids is damned early – I then write during my lunch break and work, and in the evening I try to write for an hour or so, but recently things have been so busy that sitting has slipped away. I can normally get 1500 words written a day, on average.

5) What is your favorite book in the same genre as yours?

I am a huge Clive Barker fan, and love the Books of Blood series of short stories. The certainly inspired me no end, and opened my eyes to the true meaning of horror, and what it can be used for. I have also recently read The Venus Complex by the talented Barbie Wilde, while there area two fellow British horror writers who I highly recommend people look out for. Michael Bray and Paul Flewitt. Both are fantastic writers, and their books well worth a read.

6) What are you working on now?

I am currently working on the third installment of my Highway to Hell series. It will be the final chapter and poses to be quite the epic in terms of story and scope. It is nice going back to such old and familiar characters. Parts I and II have already been published. I am also waiting on the final comments to come back from editor on a vampire novel I have written. None of that lovey-dovey stuff mind you. This is a hardcore horror tale that I hope brings the bite back to the vampire genre.

Author Interview with MaryAnn Kempher

foreverdoomedbanner

I’m hosting an interview today with MaryAnn Kempher, author of mystery novel “Forever Doomed”.

1)      What’s the hardest part of being an author?

The self-discipline it takes to sit down and write when there’s so many other things you’d rather be doing.

2) Can you give us a short synopsis of Forever Doomed?

Former detective Jack Harney agrees to do an old Army buddy a favor. He takes over the friends job as head of security on a cruise ship. He expects the gig to be easy and even fun. Instead, a week into the cruise a passenger is murdered, then a member of the crew. The ship is turned around; Jack has a week to find the killer or the case will go to the local authorities, and likely never be solved. This book has a scratch-your-head mystery, some laughs, and some sizzle.

3) Is this part of a series, or stand-alone?

Both. This is my second book and a lot of the same characters from book one are in it, but you don’t have to have read my first book to understand and enjoy Forever Doomed.

4) How many hours per day do you spend writing?

The number of hours varies, but usually 2-4.

5) What is your favorite book in the same genre as yours?

I love Janet Evanovich. Her Stephanie Plum books crack me up.

6) What are you working on now?

I’m working on my third book, another murder mystery. As with the first two books, a lot of the same characters will be in book three, but it can be read as a stand-alone.

About The Book

Forever_Doomed_ebook_amazon_BrighterTitle: Forever Doomed

Author: MaryAnn Kempher

Genre: Mystery

It’s not wise to wander the cruise ship Forever alone at night. You might not live to see daylight.

Detective Jack Harney agrees to do an old Army buddy a favor. Curt Noble had some personal business to attend to, he didn’t say what. What he did say was he needed someone to temporarily take over his duties as head of security on the struggling cruise ship Forever. Jack hesitates, but he owes Curt his life so agrees. He’s told the worst mischief he can expect to encounter will be the occasional shoplifter, or drunk. Instead, one week into the cruise, a beautiful red head and a member of the crew are ruthlessly murdered. Are the two murders connected? It’s up to Jack to find out. He must find the killer before the ship returns to Tampa’s port, or worse, before another dead body is found. This won’t be easy. The ship is old, it’s security systems outdated, and clues are few, or so it seems at first

It’s not just a sense of obligation that motivates Jack to agree to Curt’s request; Jack moved thousands of miles, started over, and still can’t get Amy O’Brian out of his heart or mind. When she shows up on the ship, as part of a large wedding party, Jack must fight to stay focused. To make matters worse, Amy isn’t his only distraction; a sexy and mysterious woman has made it her mission to seduce Jack.

As the body count rises, and time slips away, Jack has to ask himself, “Did someone commit the perfect crime?”

Author Bio

Inspiration comes from watching way too much Monty Python. The abstract and the absurd way of looking at normal life, not only offers humor, but questions many problems in society in a light-hearted manner. If we can laugh at ourselves, if we can laugh at life, problems do not seem quite so difficult to tackle.  In fact, problems are not as complicated as they seem; everything is very simple. If you can laugh at it, write about it and read about it, most likely one would think about it.

Author Jennifer Ott has written several satire fiction, Wild Horses, The Tourist and two non-fiction books Love and Handicapping and Ooh Baby Compound Me! Her latest book about the homecoming of a Vietnam Veteran, Edge of Civilization will be released soon.

Jennifer Ott lives in Long Beach, California, enjoys the sun, the sand, the surf and lots of Mexican food.

Book Excerpt from By My Choice

bymychoicebanner

I’m hosting an excerpt today from erotic romance “By My Choice”. Enjoy!

Book Excerpt

“I don’t want you!”
It was a lie, they both knew it. Her voice might ring with all the obstinacy, all the stubborn resistance in her character, but it still was a lie. She wanted him, had done so since she had been old enough to see men as men. But even though she had fallen in lust with him very long ago, this did not mean she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him, did not even necessarily mean she wanted to act on the lust. She definitely did not want the position of the ErGer, did not want to lose her independence, her emotional and physical distance, her mind to him. She did not want to be so utterly in his, or anyone’s control. It took more courage, more trust, than she was able to give. So she threw the words as a challenge at him, a gauntlet and statement of intent. He accepted it.
“You won’t have a choice.” He crooned, his lips playing over the sensitive skin of her ear and drawing an involuntary moan from her mouth as she felt his caress in every pore of her body. “No choice at all. You will be mine tonight, the only question is how it will come to pass.”
She lived in no illusion that he was giving her any choice, asking her for an opinion in the matter. A suspicion supported when his next words whispered over her ear, the touch of his breath a caress that made her tremble.
“I could hold you in my arms until you scream from need but I think it would be harder for you to overcome the injury to your dignity than any fright I might give you. So I will carry you over to the bed and take my time playing with you, preparing you until you are lost in the pleasure of my touch and there will be no space for any fear, any embarrassment, when I take and bind you.”
His lips had found her throat, nibbled along it, the sharp incisor’s scratch a counterpoint to his oh so soft lips. She knew she would not escape him, would lose the life she knew in these rooms —  and that there was nothing she could do against it. Still, her hands formed fists and dared to hit his chest, barely making him hesitate in his movements. A gentle nip on her shoulder was all the punishment he meted out as he lifted her.
“Fight, little one. Fight as much as you need to. I will enjoy it.”

About The Book

By My Choice ...Title: By My Choice

Author: Christine Blackthorn

Genre: Erotic Romance

Sometimes the path of life seems inevitable — what does it mean to choose?

Jennifer Ashton has spent her whole life in one Supernatural court or the other but the realities of what this means are only brought home to her when her best friend is forced to sell her to a vampire, and not any vampire, but one she knows well. Caught in the double betrayal of friendship and love she needs to decide what her life is going to be.

Jennifer is a financial manager, her control over every aspect of her own life complete. She does not allow anything to upset her rationality, no emotion, no sensation, no desire. The only weakness she has accepted is her unlimited loyalty to her best friend, the friend who betrays her by selling her to a competitor. She joins her new master in Paris where she begins to realise that he has as little choice as she does. Can she accept that by giving up everything, by giving him everything, they might both regain their lives?

This novella is an erotic romance with elements of mild bondage

Someone once suggested to me the reason for my stories lay in the desire to offset the tedium and rationality of academic life. He wasn’t an academic or he would have known better.  It is best to use research against tedium, students to offset the rationality and an unlimited supply of stressballs for the faculty meetings. The stories? Well, they are just for me – like a mental manicure.
