Author Interview The Unknown Sun

I’m hosting an interview for the book tour for “The Unknown Sun”. My questions are bolded, the author’s responses are in regular font.

What’s the hardest part of being an author?

The hardest part is translating what is in my head to paper. I see, hear, feel every inch of my stories in my mind like a movie, but something always feels like it gets lost when it’s written down. The colors aren’t exact, there’s not quite the right word for an emotion a person is feeling, etc. The written word feels so lacking at times!

Can you give us a short synopsis of The Unknown Sun?

Seventeen-year-old Moira is haunted by the accidents that claimed her parents and sisters. When a strange boy who seems to know too much about her past attacks her, Moira fears death will come for her a third time. She is rescued by twins Airi and Belamar, the winged heirs to the throne in Skyfall, and taken to safety in their world.

But Skyfall is dying, and the gods who had created and protected Airi and Belamar’s world have been missing since the Great War. Moira, Airi, and Belamar must find a journal left by the twins’ deceased mother, Tanari, that tells of a prophecy that must be fulfilled to find the gods known as The Unknown Sun so that Skyfall can be saved.

Deeper, darker, secrets unravel around the three friends as a revolution threatens their quest and the boy who tried to destroy Moira on Earth hunts them. Tanari knew more than she had let on, and within her journal a story is more than it seems, the past foretells the future, and a far-reaching plan is unveiled.

Why did Tanari reach across time and space to entrust a simple human girl with saving Skyfall? Who are the mysterious “Four” mentioned in the journal? And why does another god want her, and The Unknown Sun, dead?

What inspired you to write this book?

A dream I had when I was about 13. I mulled over it, plotted, it planned it, breathed it, for a long time. I’ve always loved fantasy…angels, demons, dragons, magic, etc, but even then I knew I’d have to do a lot of growing up before writing such a big, deep, and complicated story (the overall 3 book story arc). So I waited until I was worthy.

How many hours per day do you spend writing?

About 3. I work full time and have a family, so I write when my boys go to bed. It makes for slow going, but I’d rather go slow and get it right then go fast and create crap.

Name your top five favorite books.

Oh, so hard! I love so many! I am a rereader. I reread everything. But to narrow it down (in no particular order!) I’d have to say The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, A Wrinkle in Time by L’Engle, Beauty by McKinley, Sora’s Quest (and entire series) by Shreffler, and For the Roses by Garwood.

I can go on forever. I love far more than just five books!

What are you working on now?

Currently I am writing book 2, Pillars of Light, the continuation of Moira, Airi, and Belamar’s quest to find not only a missing god, but the truth about themselves and why Lenos is out to destroy them all. The Unknown Sun is the book with the questions, Pillars of Light holds all the answers, and the third book, The Fourth Dawn, will have our heroes deciding and acting on those answers to save not only their world…but the entire universe!
