I’m interviewing Tiaan Lubbe today, author of YA/NA dystopian/science-fiction “To The Stars”. My questions are bolded, the author’s responses are in regular font.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
What’s not hard about being an author? I think we love it so much because we hate it so much. The ultimate love-hate relationship. However, what I think the hardest part of being an author is, is that little voice that’s ever-present and always telling you that what you are writing sucks! Though without that voice, we wouldn’t be able to produce any good writing.
Can you give us a short synopsis of To The Stars?
That’s a dangerous and hard thing to ask an author, but it here goes-
To the Stars in one sentence can be described as a story about the end of the world, forbidden love and deadly secrets.
It’s about the world finding out that it will end in sixty years. Some lose the will to live and others take the chance to create chaos in a world already doomed. Then a scientist with the research and technology to save a percentage of the population of Earth through building Ark Ships step forward and offers salvation. Though, he does not give it for free but demands that he become sole leader of Earth so as to, in his mind, make certain that chaos does not trample their chances. The world votes and accepts, though they had little choice.
Sixty year later, just before the Ark Ships take off into the stars is where our story plays out. Noah is the grandson of the original scientist and his father is now leader, having inherited the role from his father. However, he does not want to be. His mind is on one thing – Zara. Zara is a thick-skinned engineer on one of the Ark ships, her father a former general, accused of being in alliance with the rebels. He disappeared when she was young without any explanation or warning.
When an explosion on the Ark ship they work on goes off, they are thrown together into a journey of no return where they will find out things they didn’t want to and be forced to make decisions they shouldn’t have to.
I don’t want to give away too much…so I think that should be enough.
What inspired you to write this book?
I was watching a documentary about possible ways the world could end and ways in which we could go about to save ourselves when the idea for this book struck me. It’s always in the unexpected places.
How many hours per day do you spend writing?
I try to be disciplined and force myself to write at least for 2 hours a day. If I didn’t study and work full-time that would be a lot more. I believe that in tackling a huge project like a book, a writer should set a goal for himself/herself every day. Slow and steady wins the race. Writing every day to keep us fit in our craft is also essential.
Name your top five favorite books.
I’m a series kind of reader, so I’ll include series/cycles/trilogies in this list…
- Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Poalini (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance)
- Lorien Legacies by Pittacus Lore (I am number four and the rest)
- Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (Of course!)
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
- Heroes by Joe Abercrombie
What are you working on now?
At the moment I’m working on trying to get my sanity back after this crazy year. I’ve also planned out and scribbled some notes and things for my next novel. I’ll start writing full time on that soon. It’s title so far is, Somnambulist and it will incorporate some Greek myth with a modern day adventure through underground government organisations with a cracking villain.
