He looked at me his eyes turned sliver. “Let’s begin, full integration of all active Nannies begin, program alpha 777 start.” My body jerked as every muscle in my body tighten; pain filled my body like never before as if every part of my body was being ripped apart. Blood run from my eyes and ears as I screamed at the top of my lungs.

“Just a little more and it will be all over, began download at lowest speed.” I screamed as my mind went blank I could feel my memories, thoughts, everything that I was fade, within minutes my childhood was gone all that remained was the past three years of pain. The pain lessened and stopped, I stopped screaming. “Is it over now?” I asked as tears of blood still ran from my eyes. He looked back at me with a smile.

“The painful part is over now; your brain has been successfully reconfigured to allow for the download process, your past has also been erased, who you were is no more, and our memories have begun to download to your mind. Book Excerpt

“Monica! Over here!” came the ingratiatingly mousey voice of Carla St. Marie, the bubbly blonde rejection counselor. She had poked her head out of the conference room I was already heading toward. She stepped out fully and gingerly closed to door behind her. Her business casual attire annoyed me the same way all business casual annoys me—namely, you can’t have mutually exclusive descriptors trying to duke it out over a terrible polo and slacks.

“You know you can turn on the lights here, right?” I asked, hoping that she would pick up on my irritation. She didn’t. “Thank you so much for coming in,” she said, her tone falling from bubbly to merely buoyant.

“It’s been a slow couple of months. It wasn’t a big deal,” I said with a practiced amount of aloofness. I don’t think I had been into the office in at least two weeks, come to think of it. She twitched toward large windows behind her, sneaking a glance into the conference room. It wasn’t unusual; I’ve noticed that the third grades tend to be a skittish lot. “What’s the deal?”
She turned back to me and swallowed. “I like your hair,” she said, trying to change the subject. Buoyancy was lost. She was hardly even peppy anymore—it was getting weird.

 “Carla, focus.”

She inhaled deeply and jiggled in place as she let out the air. The staccato puffs of air would have been hilarious if my patience wasn’t quickly evaporating. “Escalation.”

I made what I hoped was a concerned face, but one which probably erred more toward annoyed. “How bad?”

“Well…” she stepped aside and gestured into the conference room. I took the cue and peered inside.

A grey-business-suited man sat at the table with his right profile to me, peering at the walls nervously. He was generically handsome, clean shaven, and dark haired. I was about to question what exactly Carla was getting at when he turned to look at the other wall, revealing a nasty welt below his eye. And then he brought his hand up to scratch at his hair, and I could see it was covered in gauze with a dark stain in the middle.

Author Bio

7862046Jonathan Bruce began writing what amounted to terrible Star Trek: The Next Generation fan fiction when he was four. Although the original manuscripts are lost (or perhaps destroyed), we can rest assured that his prose has improved significantly since then. After high school, he began writing and directing plays which gradually improved depending on whom you ask. He discovered his love of a good fight scene after writing a Dracula knock-off which took a 19th century classic and made it less about Victorian yearning and 300% more about stabbing things in the jugular.

And yes, this means he wrote vampire fiction before Stephanie Meyer made it cool to sparkle in the sun.

He has a Master’s Degree in History, thanks largely to his thesis focusing on MUSIC, a Milwaukee-based school desegregation campaign during the 1960′s. He also enjoys discussing/making fun of pop culture of the 20th century and reading books of a non-historical nature. In his off moments, you can catch him writing for fun or making inane movies about nothing in particular. He also occasionally provides work for Twenty Four Pages a Second, a pretty keen website you should totally check out.

Book Excerpt from Journal of a South African Zombie Apocalypse

zombieapocalypsebanner

I’m sharing an excerpt today from a YA horror/dystopian book about zombies. Yep, you read that right – zombies! And just in time for Halloween. Enjoy!

Book Excerpt

There was a brief silence before Katlego finally spoke.

‘Okay, everyone ready?’

We had our weapons drawn. Rik and I had our spears and Pa was gripping his crowbar. Dirk had pulled out his massive hunting knife.

‘On the count of three, we step into the alley. Spread out evenly to draw them apart. Take out the brain and put them down… fast. ‘

We nodded and, on three, we fanned out into the alley. They knew we were there immediately and suddenly their docile shuffling turned into a determined walk towards us. Ironically, one of the lady zombies headed straight for me. She was dressed in a dark blue uniform and I soon realised she must have been a nurse.

The blue pants were now ripped and stained, and her eyes were a dark red, with dry blood caked around the sockets. My heart started racing again. I kept repeating don’t be scared, don’t be scared in my head, and tried to remember Pa’s words about using fear to survive. Taking a deep breath, I charged at Nurse Zombie with my spear, aiming for below the chin. I came in a little too fast and got the angle wrong. The spear pierced under her chin, but came out by her ear, totally missing the brain.

The spear was lodged and it was like I had a zombie on a lead. She tried to move in every direction, but I fought her, pushing and pulling. What now?

I decided I needed to get the spear loose, so using all my strength, I pushed, channelling all the power in my legs like a rugby player in a scrum. I started to jog, forcing her to reel backwards. Then I suddenly stopped. Nurse Zombie toppled backwards and her weight let me pull the spear loose. As she landed on her back I jumped forward, plunging the spear through her left eye. Lucky shot, but it worked. I spun around, hoping Pa had seen my handiwork, but it looked like everyone had been concentrating on their own kill. Pa’s eyes met mine.

‘You win?’

I nodded and smiled.

Illumination

Ever saw a person Illuminate a room when they came into it

Or maybe it was you one day, one time, and you knew it

The countenance on your face was a light in a dark place

Or a star but in close space never too early and never too late

Always the right time and always the right day

Cause your words are a breathe of fresh air to hear and intake

Radiating with grace from your feet to her face

Elegant with taste pure and unlaced

Higher than a Queen but something like an Ace

It was gloom before you came in the room

But you never made haste always a smile on your face

People get stuck in place as if starring into space At the moves, you make and the steps you take

You are a sunny morning after a long night of rain that makes me happy to forget the pain

The countenance on your face is a light in a dark place or a star but in close space

Ever saw a person Illuminate a room when they came into it or maybe it was you one day time and you knew it

Excerpt

iPhones and Spirituality

I would like to talk about iPhones and spirituality, and what spirituality has to do with right use of things like iPhones. This may be a bit of an “opposing views” presentation to other points here; I hope the challenge is ultimately constructive.

My first point has to do with one of Rajeev’s points in our last meeting, of “Embrace your pain,” and what it really means for the iPhone, and more specifically how our use of technologies like the iPhone relates to spiritual work such as embracing your pain. Rajeev really made several excellent points in his lecture last time, and I’d like to pick up on just one: “Embrace your pain.” The iPhone’s marketing proposition is as a game changing technological drug that will help you dodge this spiritual lesson. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the iPhone is designed, marketed, and sold as a portable “Avoid spiritual work” system.

Is there any alternative to using various technologies to avoid spiritual work? Let’s look at recent history, the 1980’s, and how that decade’s technological drug is something we may now have some critical distance to look at. There is a classic Far Side cartoon that says in its caption, “In the days before television,” and shows a family hunched around an area on the blank wall where a television would be. The irony is that this wasn’t the days before television at all; the days before television were that much more dynamic and vibrant, and the cartoon was only what you get if you subtract television from the 80’s, when televisions had drained all of the life out of things. The distinction may be subtle, but there is a profound difference between those two versions of what it means to be without television, one vibrant and with people doing things and another with people bleakly staring at a wall—and this is why many people now have made an intentional and mindful decision to avoid television as a pack of cigarettes for the mind. Another Far Side cartoon, as best I can remember, shows an aboriginal tribesman standing on the opposite side of a deep chasm from a crowd of angry middle-class suburbanites, where a vine bridge has just been cut and fallen into the chasm, with a caption something like, “And so Umbuntu stood, the angry suburbanites stranded on the other side of the chasm. Their idol was now his, as well as its curse.” And the tribesman was holding a television. One wonders what the Far Side would say about iPhones after they had carved out their niche. And that brings me to my second point, what I call, “the timeless way of relating.”

About The Book

the_luddites_guide_to_technology_iiTitle: The Luddite’s Guide to Technology

Author: CJS Hayward

Genre: creative non-fiction / religion and spirituality / technology – social aspects

Mammon, as it is challenged in the Sermon on the Mount, represents such wealth and possessions as one could have two thousand years ago. But that is merely beer as contrasted to the eighty proof whisky our day has concocted. The Sermon on the Mount aims to put us in the driver’s seat and not what you could possess in ancient times, and if the Sermon on the Mount says something about metaphorical beer, perhaps there are implications for an age where something more like eighty proof whisky is all around us.

Some have asked, “If a much lesser C.S. Lewis were Orthodox, what would he be like?” And the answer may well be, “CJS Hayward.”

Hayward has lived in the U.S., Malaysia, England, and France, and holds master’s degrees bridging math and computers (UIUC), and philosophy and theology (Cambridge).

Book Excerpt from Winterkill

I’m hosting an excerpt today from romantic suspense “Winterkill”. Enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

I met him for happy hour at the Yella Feather bar over on the south side about 5:30 on a hot August evening. He was dead by 6:15. Ours was a short relationship.

Lieutenant Deaver was one of the old guys with the San Antonio PD. He strolled in with the coroner, finding me where the first responder had put me. Over in a corner holding up a yellowed wall that reeked with years of stale nicotine.

            “You okay?” Deaver asked.

“Yeah, think so.” I took a weak swallow of warm Coke.

“What happened?” He pulled out a rickety chair and sat down.

I slumped into a seat beside him. “I didn’t see the killer. My back was to the door when I heard the sound of a round chambered. Right in front me—Rodriguez was talking to me—a small, round hole drilled into his forehead. I heard the door bang shut and a car squeal off, but by the time I made it outside there was nothing to see and only cordite to smell.”

I looked around the bar, broken-down scarred tabletops, wobbly chairs, flaking vinyl floors with duct tape covering the cracks. The stink of disinfectant and stale grease mingled with gun smoke. Helluva place for a kid to die.

“How long you known him, Cahill?” Deaver asked softly.

“I’d say about forty-five minutes, give or take.”

He scratched his left armpit, his face screwed into thought. “What were you doing with Rodriguez? Source of yours?”

Book Excerpt from Saving Jamie

I’m happy to share an excerpt today from romantic suspense “Saving Jamie”. Enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

Their lips were locked as he backed into the house and shoved the door closed with his foot. He picked her up and carried her upstairs. They fell across the bed locked in each other’s arms. His hands found the bottom of her tank top and shoved it over her head exposing her bare breast. The cool air chilled her naked skin until he took her taut nipple into his mouth and gently teased it, setting off fire low in her belly. Her fingers roamed through his thick dark hair and her head went back enjoying his touch.

Rex moved to the other breast. “I’ve been so worried, Jamie. I was afraid I’d never see you again.” His tongue circled her nipple.

Jamie moaned. “I didn’t know at the time what was missing until my memory returned. It was you, Rex. I missed you.”

Rex stood and shoved her pajama pants down her hips and she kicked them off, leaving her naked. He removed his shirt and jeans and they molded together.

His body warmed her all the way to her toes. She found his mouth and bit his lower lip then put the tip of her tongue to the corner. He sucked it into his mouth and teased it with his own. His thumb and index finger rolled her hard nipple between his fingers sending surges through her.

Jamie let her hands roam over his back and down to his firm butt. He moaned. She kissed his neck and flipped him over on his back. Her lips followed a path down his chest. “If you keep that up I won’t last.” He turned her over and covered her chest with kisses. She gasped for breath and tangled her fingers in his hair. His hand traced a path over her skin. Passion pounded the blood through her heart, chest, and head. He slid a finger inside her and waves of sensations throbbed through her.

Author Bio

IMG_3588Carol Braswell has been writing since 1994. She took it seriously three years ago when a newspaper story caught her eye and Finding Amy was born. But Amy had an identical twin and her story had to be told as well. Saving Jamie dictated her story, Carol listened and Jamie’s adventure came to life.

“Several beta readers told me they didn’t like Jamie in the first book. That’s exactly how I wanted her to come across. But I had to redeem her in Saving Jamie. My editor said I had.”

Mrs. Braswell says she writes what she loves to read. That is a lot of suspense and a little romance thrown in to keep the emotions flowing. At present Mrs. Braswell is working on three books and plans to release two more after re-writes. “It is a daunting task, to say the least, but will be well worth the effort.”

She lives in east Texas with her hero husband who can fix anything and three very spoiled Maltese. She says her home was built for comfort and tranquility. Hubby built her a pergola where she escapes to writes.
