Now she must race against the clock to harness her own powers and save her new friends. Can she be more than a renegade? Can she be a hero too?

What the reviewers say:

The best debut novel I’ve read in years. Blue is the type of unique, honest, protagonist usually only experienced in Stephen King novels. The Blue Effect was part Fight Club, part X-Men and sucked me in from the very first chapter to the very last word. Powerfully written with a compelling plot and wicked antagonist. Couldn’t ask for anything more – except the sequel! – Robert Dugoni, NY Times Best Selling Author My Sister’s Grave

Author Bio

author photoRose Shababy and her family reside in eastern Washington State. Rose grew up in the Northwest but swears she’s going to move to warmer climates someday. She’s claimed this for over 20 years, however, and has yet to move more than 75 miles away from her mother.

Rose has a deep love of all things Star Trek and yearns to travel the heavens, as well as an intense desire to be bitten by a radioactive spider. Unfortunately she sucks at science and math so she hasn’t been able bring her dreams to life, instead living vicariously through books, comics, television and film. She hopes to someday make a million dollars so she can afford to buy her way to the international space station, but she’d settle for being able to fly around the world and leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Rose also loves to cook and worked for years in a gourmet Italian grocery and deli where she learned to hone her skills. She prepares culinary masterpieces for her family, but fervently wishes the dishes would wash themselves. Especially now that her dishwashers/children are nearly grown and only one still lives at home.

Rose likes to use her free time wisely. For instance, she likes to daydream, will often read for hours until she falls asleep on the couch with an electric blanket and a warm tabby cat curled up on her hip, as well as spending cozy weekend days watching Syfy movies like Sharknado and Mega Piranha with her husband.

If Rose were a cartoon animal, she’d prefer to be a wise old owl or a sleek and sexy jaguar, but in reality she’d probably be a myopic mole with coke-bottle glasses.

Book Excerpt from Spring Blessings

I’m happy to share an excerpt today from urban fantasy “Spring Blessings”. Enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

It’s a god damn shame, thought Karl Spangler as he watched his partner of three years pace like a hostile beast in a cage, that I’m not Norvita’s type. She is stupidly hot when she’s mad. It makes a man want to do bad things to get that kind of attention from her. Her jewel encrusted hands gripped tightly on her firm sculpted hips just above the belt line of her low rise jeans. He watched enviously as her fingers pressed into warm brown skin. Her full pillowy and lacquered lips pursed into a pouted scowl that smeared her blackberry colored lipstick just a little under her lower lip. She threw her head back shaking out her shiny black hair as her arched spine pushed her perfect breasts out which made them look larger than they were. However, the sexiest thing about an angry Norvita Patel was her eyes. When she was mad her rich Harappan eyes danced like Kali in the fire light of a funeral pyre. She could make the blood rush downward when her eyes sparked with malice. No wonder she and Carson fought all the time.

Even I want to throw something at her when she’s this angry just to see if she’d rip me apart and…

Oh no, can she hear me think this?

“I don’t understand what is wrong with you idiots!” Yelled Norvita Patel with a distinct New

England accent that ripped apart ear drums with piercing staccatos and made your heart beat that much faster. The perpetrators huddled together in terror of the ninety pound girl.

At least Karl knew that he was safe.

Karl ran his weather beaten fingers over the stained, old and dog-eared copy of Mages and Monsters. This series of role play books were very popular in Gaiman Heights. This is largely due to its simplified combat system and it’s compatibility with other books put out by the same publisher which included Forever Midnight and Hymn of the Lesser Gods. It was also published by a local company which was a great source of pride for the geek community. Karl never quite understood the appeal of tabletop role play games. What was so wrong with a simple board game? Why did things have to have to be complicated with math and dice? Did people need to slip out of their human skin and into a shape of imagination? He didn’t see the point in disappearing into another world with wizards and monsters. Real life, he thought, is so weird that disappearing into a fantasy world of monsters and magic didn’t seem like much of an escape. Karl had been thrown into the unseen world against his own devices. If he could escape it, it would not be to the land of ten sided dice.

It’s why he preferred P.D. James to Anne MacCaffery.

Author Interview Shadow’s Moon Tour and Giveaway

shadowsmoonbanner

I’m hosting an interview with Jami Gray, author of paranormal romance / urban fantasy “Shadow’s Moon”. My questions are bolded, the author’s responses are in regular font.

1) What’s the hardest part of being an author?

Juggling multiple roles. Not only do I write, but I have two teenage boys, a husband, and a lab that doubles as a floor rug to take care of, while maintaining a day job. As much as I’d love my writing to bring in enough income to cover my evil day job, it’s a bit behind. Until I win the lottery or my book becomes an “overnight” success, I need that health insurance. Three of the four of us wear glasses, and two of the four of us have braces. Those little buggers cost.
2) Can you give us a short synopsis of Shadow’s Moon?

I actually can since I have one under 75 words and synopsis (synopsi?) are one of the most difficult things for me to do. Here goes:

Tracker, Xander Cade, confronts an enraged Shifter in a crowded human nightclub, fraying the thin secrecy shielding the supernatural community from public scrutiny. Danger stalks the pack and she must protect her alpha and mate, Warrick Vidis, even if he doesn’t want it.

In my words: Independent, female wolf shifter, Xander, has to prove to stubborn, alpha male, Warrick, he can’t do it all on his own. Unfortunately, if he doesn’t listen, it may not just be  him that pays, but his pack and his mate.

3) Is this part of a series, or stand-alone?

This is the third book in the Kyn Kronicles series.

4) How many hours per day do you spend writing?

I actually aim for a word count (between 1500-2000, averages out to 5-7 pages), so it takes between 2-4 hours depending on how fast the words are coming.

5) What is your favorite book in the same genre as yours?

It’s a toss up between Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series or Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series. Although we could throw in Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series as well.

6) What are you working on now?

After spending the last two years writing back to back books, I’m taking a break in June to do more research for my Paranormal Romantic Suspense series, The PSY-IV Teams, so I can start the second book in July.   The first one, HUNTED BY THE PAST, comes out July 11th.

Shadow’s Moon

Shadows Moon CoverTitle: Shadow’s Moon

Author: Jami Gray

Genre: Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy

Even a wild heart can be broken…

A blonde, a brunette and a monster walk into a bar and all hell breaks loose.

It should have been the start of a bad joke, but days from a full moon Xander Cade, Tracker for the Northwest Motoki Pack, finds nothing funny about confronting an enraged Shifter in a crowded Portland nightclub filled with unsuspecting humans. The resulting carnage frays an already thin veil of secrecy shielding the supernatural Kyn community from public scrutiny, and ensures she can’t escape the one man she’s been determined to avoid, her Alpha and mate, Warrick Vidis.  Dominating, protective and compelling, Warrick threatens her individuality like no other.

As the Northwest Alpha wolf, compromise isn’t in Warrick Vidis’s vocabulary, but when his reluctant mate, Xander Cade, refuses to leave off the hunt for a killer, he has no qualms using whoever or whatever necessary to protect her or his pack. A series of unusual deaths involving lone wolves, along with anonymous threats against him and his Pack, begin to jeopardize his normal steely control. Add in Xander’s continual reluctance to fully accept their Soul bond, and the line between intellect and instinct begins to blur, leaving him wondering if one woman’s love and acceptance will be enough to save both man and wolf.

As the danger escalates, threatening not just their Pack but those closest to them, Warrick and Xander must find a way to trust each other and accept their rare bond or risk losing everything-their pack, their friends and each other.

Author Bio

Jami GrayJami Gray grew up on the Arizona-Mexico border, and was adopted at the age of 14 to suddenly become the fifth eldest of 37 children. She graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and three minors-History, English, and Theater. (Decision-making was not her forte at the time.)  Shortly after marrying her techie-geek hubby (who moonlighted as her best friend in high school) she completed a Masters in Organizational Management from University of Phoenix Oregon.

Now, years later, she’s back in the Southwest where she’s outnumbered in her own home by two Star Wars obsessed boys, one Star Wars obsessed husband, and an overly-friendly, 105-pound male lab.  Delving into the wild paranormal worlds where romance collides with suspense and Urban Fantasy is queen, manages to salvage her sanity. Or so we let her believe…

Author Interview with R.J. Blain

I’m interviewing R.J. Blain as part of the release day party of “Inquisitor”, an urban fantasy novel. Get the book from Amazon!

You can win a $10 Amazon gift card during the release day. More info at the bottom of the post.

Enjoy the interview, and thanks to the author for answering my questions.

Author Interview

1) What’s the hardest part of being an author?

This is always a difficult question for me to answer. It depends on the week and the day as often as not. Sometimes the editing process (something I typically enjoy) is the hardest because I want to release a perfect novel despite knowing there is no such thing as a perfect novel—at least, I haven’t met one yet.

But for pure intellectual difficulty, I want to say that the promotional and business side of writing is the hardest for me. I want to be writing. While worth it, it’s challenging. I was taught to be humble and not put myself up in front of a lot of people, and that’s what a writer needs to do nowadays. That’s been a very difficult transition. And to make matters more interesting, I’m a woman who writes epic and urban fantasy. That gets me enough strange looks.
2) Can you give us a short synopsis of Inquisitor?

Halloween was never one of Allison’s favorite holidays. As she’s one of the things that goes bump in the night, bad things tend to happen on Halloween. Doing a favor for a friend of hers lands her in a great deal of trouble. Accused of a murder she didn’t commit, she goes on the run a friend, who is a witch capable of keeping Allison’s inner beast under control.

But when things go from bad to worse, Allison may exchange her survivalist tendencies for vengeance…
3) Is this part of a series, or stand-alone?

It is both, oddly enough. The Witch & Wolf series is a bunch of loosely connected stories. Characters from one novel may appear as side characters in another novel. Eventually, all of the leads from the ‘stand alones’ will get together—sort of like a fuzzy, magic-wielding version of the Avengers.

For now, though, they can be treated as standalones.
4) How many hours per day do you spend writing?

This is an interesting question. When I’m not novel writing, I’m a developmental editor. When I’m drafting or editing a new project, I tend to spend 4 hours or so a day working with my clients. I’ll spend 6 to 10 hours a day writing and editing. Right before a release—usually for about two weeks—I work with clients exclusively.

I’ve been known to pull 16 hour stints of writing and editorial about two weeks prior to my deadlines. (I like finishing early…. Which is why I tend to have 2 weeks of ‘vacation’ before a release.)

Soon enough, I’ll be back to my 6 to 10 hour writing days… I’m glad I love what I do.
5) What is your favorite book in the same genre as yours?

Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files and Patricia Briggs’ Alpha and Omega are tied for favorite ‘book’ in the genre. (I’m totally cheating… linked series is just one huge book with different volumes, right?) Okay, okay… From Butcher, I think Cold Days is tied with Dead Beat and from Briggs, it’s definitely Fair Game.

I could go on and on about the various UF and epic fantasy books I love… it’s a curse.
6) What are you working on now?

I have a lot on the plate at the moment! Storm Surge, the second novel of my epic series, is drafted in three different journals. I need to get that copied into my computer, edit it, and get it sent over to the first of my editors. I need to finish drafting City of Clocks, my first fantasy YA novel. I’m about a quarter done that project. Winter Wolf, the second Witch & Wolf novel, is mostly drafted and needs put into the computer.

I’m a traditionalist like that—I do a lot of writing by hand.

I have two other books in the works as well. I’m hoping to produce 3 more novels this year, but it’ll be a lot of work! We’ll see if I reach my crazy goal. Quality comes first.

About Inquisitor

Inquisitor - RJ BlainTitle: Inquisitor

Author: R.J. Blain

Genre: Urban / Paranormal Fantasy

When Allison is asked to play Cinderella-turned-Fiancee at a Halloween ball, the last thing she expected was to be accused of murder on the same night. She has to find the killer and quick, or she’ll be put to death for the crimes she didn’t commit. To make matters worse, the victims are all werewolves.

On the short list of potential victims, Allison has to act fast, or the killer will have one more body to add to his little black book of corpses.

There’s only one problem: One of the deaths has struck too close to home, and Allison’s desire for self-preservation may very well transform into a quest for vengeance…
